Primary Weapons

Simple yet effective, these basic primary weapons serve as a shinobi's means of offense, and can be aesthetically modified to their liking. Primary weapons can be purchased at a weapon shop at any time, although it is also possible to acquire them through other means, such as ordering one from a craftsman.

Katana

Description: Commonly refereed to as a 'Samurai sword', the katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade up to three feet in length, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. As such, it has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability.

Bouchou (Knife)

Description: Contrary to what the name might imply, Bouchou is actually a rather big "knife". Bouchou is a large, foldable, cleave-like sword. The handle is roughly twelve inches long, with the blade itself being around three and a half feet in length, and nearly a foot and a half across (from blade edge to backside). The thick material used in fordging the weapon's blade makes the weapon considerably heavy, nearly one hundred and fifty pounds in total. This is a very common weapon used in the arts of Ju Kenshi, and available to all who seek that path.

Bokuto

Description: Also common referred to as "bokken," this weapon is a sword made of wood whose primary purpose is for training. It is usually shaped to look like a katana, but can also be shaped like other swords, such as the wakizashi and tanto. Although normally very basic, they also come in more ornamental designs, boasting elaborate carvings and jewels.

Description: Known as a 'Field sword', the Nodachi is a large two-handed weapon, retaining the shape of the traditional katana, but boasting a much longer blade - sometimes up to five feet in length.

Description: If a Nodachi is an oversized version of the Katana, the the Kodachi is the opposite. Just a bit larger than a Wakizachi, the sixty inch blade nonetheless retains its brethren's cutting ability, and with its compact size, makes it ideal for travel and rough terrain.

Description: Short and straight, this blade takes a similar form of a katana, but without the curvature in the blade. With the blade measuring no more than three feet, and a square guard on top, this weapon has been popularized by many ninja, hence the name.

Description: A wakizashi is similar to but shorter than a katana in shape, and usually shorter than the kodachi, with the blade no longer than twenty inches. Regardless, it retains its sharpness, and is ideal as a backup sword should the main one fail.

Description: The falcata has a one edged blade that pitches forward towards the point, the edge being concave on the lower part of the sword, but convex on top. This shape distributes the weight in such a way that it is capable of delivering a blow with the momentum of an axe, while maintaining the cutting edge of a sword. Finally, the hilt is typically hook-shaped.

Gladius

Description: The Gladius is a double-edged straight shortsword, use for cutting as well as stabbing and thrusting due to the tapered point. A solid grip one handed grip is provided by a knobbed hilt added on with ridges for the fingers. Blade strength is achieved by welding together strips, in which case the sword had a channel down the center, or by fashioning a single piece of high-carbon steel, rhomboidal in cross-section. The guard, small, barely shoots out on the sides.

Description: Commonly referred to as 'hook swords', they are usually used in pairs for full effectiveness. The blade of the weapon is straight about about two to three feet before a sharp, square hook ends at the tip. This can be used for slashing, hooking an weapon from an enemy, or even their appendage.

Description: A rapier is a slender, sharply pointed sword, ideally used for thrusting attacks. The long-bladed sword, three to four feet at the blade, is characterized by a complex hilt which is constructed to provide protection for the hand wielding it. While the blade might be broad enough to cut to some degree, the long thin blade lends itself to thrusting as the preferred means of attack.

Shotel

Description: A shotel is a curved sword. It looks very much like a scimitar. The curve on the shotel's blade varies from a curve similar to the shamshir, to almost a half circle. The blade is flat and double-edged with a diamond cross-section. The blade is about 40 inches in total length and the hilt is a simple wooden piece with no guard. The shotel is carried in a close fitting leather scabbard.

Description: The jian is a double-edged straight sword, with one-handed versions having blades varying from 45 to 80 centimeters (17.7 to 31.5 inches) in length. The weight of an average sword of 70-centimeter (28-inch) blade-length would be in a range of approximately 700 to 900 grams (1.5 to 2 pounds). There are also larger two-handed versions used for training by many styles of Kenjutsu.

Description: Like its cousin the machete, the kukri is a more durable and heavier weapon used to cut through thick wood. At twenty one inches long it is also sharp on only one side and is slightly curved comparable to a boomerang but on a smaller scale. It has a wrapped handle to reduce shock and stress on the hand.

Description: A long knife, at least six inches long, with a clip point at the top of the blade which brings the tip lower than the spine for better control. Deer Horn Knife

Description: Deer Horn Knives, also known as crescent moon knives, are specialized bladed weapons consisting of two steel crescents crossing. This crossing produces four curved, claw-like points, one of which is extended as the "main" blade. The practitioner grips the wrapped middle of the lengthened crescent with the other acting as a hand guard. Relatively short weapons that are easily concealable in clothing.

Description: A kanabo is an iron staff constructed with iron spikes or studs on one end. One or both ends of the wooden types are sheathed in iron, and on occasion, spikes. Suppressor

Description: The most common weapon among bodyguards of royalty is the suppressor. Fashioned to be a non lethal yet effective weapon against assassins, the Suppressor consists of a long staff adorned with a welded metal set of prongs to pin the enemy by the neck with both cylinder shaped prongs. Lethal versions however can be made by converting the prongs into a "U" shaped almost sickle head to pin the opponent by the neck and at the same time, behead them.

Axe

Description: The axe has survived through time and rightfully so, as its basic design makes it deadly in the hands of any properly trained soldier. With two half-moon curved blades at either side of the pole-arm, the user can penetrate defenses and cut anything down that gets in his way. The axe handle usually spans four feet, and each blade extends no more than half a foot to a foot, either on both sides or in one direction.

Description: A ghastly weapon commonly associated with the grim reaper, the scythe is a long pole-arm with a curved blade at the end, perpendicularly existing next to its handle. Chain Whip

Description: A chain whip consists of several metal rods, which are joined end-to-end by rings to form a flexible chain. Description: The rope dart is a typical kung-fu weapon that in the hands of an expert can be a devastating weapon. The weapon consists of a long loop of rope with an attached and sharpened kunai head like blade at the end which cuts on all sides. The rope dart is typically flung, swung, and wildly whipped around to make a fast, hard to see, and deadly weapon.

Meteor Hammer

Description: Of all the soft weapons, perhaps the most flashy and equally brutal is the meteor hammer. Like the rope dart it is often a staple in most monks' martial arts regiments that involve weapons. The meteor hammer consists of a lengthy hardened rope or chain that holds at its end a steel ball the size of a cantaloupe. For more experienced practitioners the meteor hammer can have both ends attached to a steel ball.

Originally designed for practitioners of Goken, these thick, metallic bracers deal additional blunt force trauma to targets (increasing the "Goken" base technique's bone-breaking ability by an additional 10%). At will, these bracers can eject large metal protrusions from the bracers, further increasing damage.

Tonfa

Description: Traditionally made from red oak and wielded in pairs, The tonfa can be gripped by the short perpendicular handle or by the longer main shaft. In defense, if the handle is grasped then the shaft protects the forearm and hand while the knob protects the thumb. If both ends of the shaft are held, the shaft can be used to ward off blows and the handle can be used as a hook to catch the opponent's weapons. One can also swing the shaft to strike the target, as large amounts of momentum can be imparted to the shaft by twirling the tonfa by the handle. Finally, by holding the shaft and the handle of the tonfa together, one can use it for holding or breaking techniques.

Telescopic Baton

Description: A heavy steel bar with many separate chambers that initially starts out at a size where an adult male can wrap his palm around it comfortable. Upon extending the many chambers the baton extends out to make a six inch weapon of steel to whack at the intended target. Though it does not carry the same weight as a fully steel weapon it does cause excruciating pain with a solid hit and is quite easy to conceal.

Cudgel

Description: A brutish and simple weapon the Cudgel is a steel apparatus about a few inches shorter than an adults middle finger to his shoulder. The apparatus of the cudgel is a grip for the hand which is usually padded or wrapped to ensure comfort and a bit of shock reduction, the rest of it is a gradually fatter steel club shape much like a baseball bat but thicker. Whether the opponent has armor or by some chance thick enough skin to ignore a blade, the weight of a well swung Cudgel will threaten to bruise, break, and shatter.
